I've used them close to 40 years now. I used the first MXR pedals to come out in the early 70's. The phase 90 was a prime staple of the lot as well as a VOX Crybaby. Fast forward and there is a staggering amount of guitar pedals out there. I never considered distortion pedals as my Marshall amps sufficed with that in "the old days". I began a quest a few years ago to play at lower volumes and such to save my ears among other things. Bear in mind I've spent some big bucks on this quest to give you my philosophy for free. One thing to remember, when playing live and you mic your amp, chances are the PA is solid state (no tubes). Therefore the best tube amp well be at the hands of a solid state mixer and amplifier. Now about those pedals. I was playing a live gig outside and used a Fender Frontman cheapo amp, but clean. I needed something quick and cheap. I bought a couple of $49 dollar pedals. Out was from out of town and not out front, I was filling in for another guitar player who was sick. This is what I discovered in spades. That Fender Frontman and a Bad Monkey and a Digitech wah wah got me complements I couldn't believe and I thought it sounded good too. So, back home I pulled out my Deluxe Reverb and my $200 pedals and did some comparing. I bought some $20 Danelectro pedals and found them to be not bad. In fact, in live gigs, big enough to mic, the cheap pedals do remarkably fine. In the studio, not so though. Since the studio is a different animal, I'll limit my comment to live shows only. Only other musicians will know what you are using so don't be afraid to try cheap pedals and keep more cash in your pocket. Recently, I used the Digitech Bad Monkey with my Deluxe Reverb at a show and was complemented on my tone. Could have save alot if I had experimented more.

WOW - What a great month of April!

WOW - The Band had a great month!
Thanks to everyone who came to our events this month.... Over the many years of playing, I look back on an interesting trail that brings me to my beginning. I picked up guitar at 6 years old from my older brothers during the hootenanny years. I played well enough that I entertained relatives at Christmas time till I got to high school. I found friends interested in guitar too. Now, here is where I start my amplifier trail. I got a Kent electric guitar from my parents at Christmas with no amp. Hmmmm. Well, I got a cheap tube amp of the day (rare now). But, being the tone freak I was, I needed the best,,,A Fender Bandmaster. Whoa, it was great, I hauled it everywhere, what a status symbol. Short lived tho'. It wasn't loud enough. Bands were getting louder and louder. I worked part time after school by now and got a Kustom red sparkle roll and pleated amp. Whoa, impressive, solid state 100 watt. Strange, my bandmaster was 40 watts and louder, no matter, this was cool looking. Paul Revere and the Raiders would be proud. Ok, so in lies the problem, needed louder. I tried a new Traynor out and used it for month or two, and a couple others, but then Led Zeppelin happened. I needed a Marshall amp. I don't know how, but I got one, the 50 watt jcm. Magic happened, it was loud sounded great and I was on my way, picked up a 100 watt plexi and so on. The Rolling Stones went on tour using Ampeg v4 amps. I was tired of Marshall amps blowing speakers and tubes by now so I got Ampeg amplifiers. That Ampeg sounded good, was reliable as I could have hoped for and heavy, heavy, heavy. I used it about 10 years, longer than any amplifier I'd owned til then. Raising a family now. Couldn't use big amps. I got a Sunn concert head and cabinet. That was a very good solid state amp. It lasted a couple of years. I had bought some combo Peavy amps that sounded okay by now, 20 years later, I'm in the late 1980's now and I really wanted that great sound out a small combo amp. Yep, I bought a Fender untimate chorus, now that's better, used it pert near ten years. Married my 2nd wife and got a, you guessed it , Fender deluxe 90, Fender deluxe vm, and a new Fender deluxe reverb just recently at Christmas 2009. So, I really liked that old Fender Bandmaster I had originally, that as I grew older, I wanted to recapture that sound again. Right back where I started, almost 45 years ago and couldn't be happier.

Our Post about the "Black Beauty" guitar.

Hi, I'm Don "Duck" Hightower with Blind Five O. Below is my last blog about one of my favorite guitars "Black Beauty" Enjoy!

As a musician, one of the strangest things that happened as I grew older was trying to reclaim , buy, and find all those instruments that I've had over the years and wished I'd never gotten rid of. Specifically as a guitar player, I traded many a guitar to upgrade to what I believed to a better guitar. Some times this was achieved, however, many times I let that nice guitar go that I should have kept. As an example, for several years I played a Gibson SG. This was a fine instrument and so I came to find out, a rare instrument of the day. It was a 1972 SG deluxe. This model was only made for 3 years. I traded it for a 1968 Black Beauty Les Paul custom. I would say I made a good deal of course, but well, 30 years later, I lament trading it off so easy. So guitar collecting began after age 50. I still have the Black Beauty. I recently bought a 2008 Gibson LP classic goldtop to retire that dependable old Black Beauty. It still works and plays great, but that 15 pound guitar weight is tough to play standing up for hours nowadays. I got a telecaster and a stratocaster plus several other guitars now too. Why, cause I aways wanted them, I just never played them in my younger"rocker" days. Yes, I bought an SG too.
Just to own one, go figure.

New Blog Is Online

As the former "The Generators Band" we decided to change our name and our website to reflect who we are.
